Thermoshield
THERMO-SHEILD is an elastomeric acrylic emulsion, with insulative ceramic beads. It is made of totally synthetic state-of-the-art materials, which is not subject to rapid breakdown like traditional paints. Following is a list of advantages you get when you apply THERMO-SHEILD coatings.
THERMO-SHEILD solves corrosion and leaking problems.
- Excellent adhesion to most substrates, including steel, galvanized steel and aluminum.
- Waterproofing, the roofing with withstand ponding of water.
- Long life; is not damaged by ultra violet (UV) light.
- Remains flexible, eliminates thermal-shock damage (maintains its strength up to 400 degrees F).
- Has an insulative equivalent to an R-22 insulation, against solar heat.
- Cost effective; will pay for itself in a short time by energy savings.
- Becomes a seamless, flexible membrane.
- May be tinted to desired color, excellent fade resistance.
- Hail resistant.
- Fire resistant.
- Mildew resistant.
- Wind resistant.
- Sound deadening.
THERMO-SHEILD Roof Coating swells when wet becoming waterproof. Breathes when atmosphere is dry, so trapped moisture can escape. This prevents blistering and is very low maintenance.
Once in place, the THERMO-SHEILD Roof System becomes a seamless, continuous monolithic membrane impervious to adverse weather conditions, airborne contaminants, and extreme temperature fluctuations.
As prooved by accelerated aging test, the THERMO-SHEILD system lasts longer than conventional roofs. It is cold-applied, so it’s a safer procedure. It is non-toxic in liquid or cured form, environmentally cleaner, eliminating noxious fumes.
- Environmentally safe - Water based, both liquid form and cured coatings are free of toxic materials. Lab tests show there are no harmful effects from their application.
- Resistant to fading - Japanese tests showed THERMO-SHEILD had less fading than other paint tested for the Japanese Market.
- Long life - Applications more than 17 years old are still holing up well with no signs of cracking, hardening or peeling. Roofs are still watertight even where they have been exposed to long term ponding.
- Resistant to chemicals - The Calcoast tests show the finished products were unharmed by some very harsh chemicals, including battery acid and salt water solutions.
Other important THERMO-SHEILD Roof System benefits include:
- Waterproof roofs, even flat ones.
- A high degree of puncture – resistance.
- Exceptional elongation characteristics.
- Absolute bondability to any metal substrate.
- Stability under extreme temperature.
- High resistance to atmospheric pollution.
- High resistance to UV degradation.
THEROMO-SHEILD differs from other methods of insulation because of its unique formula that takes advantage of 3 laws of physics.
THERMO-SHEILD provides a durable thermal barrier. The insulating hollow ceramic beads incorporated in the THERMO-SHEILD formula behave much like glass however even more efficient. Glass can be heated by a torch until it melts and yet can be safely held in hand at the same time.
THERMO-SHEILD dissipates heat. Within 10 seconds of removing a blowtorch flame from borosilicate ceramic beads, they can be sagely handed from one hand to another. This means that over 2000 degrees of heat have been dissipated in less than 10 seconds.
The hollow ceramic microspheres reflective quality affects the warming phenomenon called “Mean Radiant Temperature” where heat waves from a source such as direct sunlight cause a person to feel warmer even thought the actual air temperature is no different between a shady and sunny location.
It is the molecular friction within the skin which makes the body feel warmer. So the surrounding air can be cooler but the body will feel warmer in the presence of THERMO-SHEILD, meaning thermostats can be set lower for the same degree of comfort.
Ingredients of the Coating System.
Resins - Acrylic elastomeric resins, which add these benefits:They remain elastic – move with any changes in the building, covering cracks and preventing new ones from appearing.
They cover the entire surface with a seamless membrane preventing water or air penetration.
They give UV protection. They get tougher and more stretchy with UV exposure, insuring long life.
The Roof Coat resin has a very special property know as “ VARIABLE PERMEABILITY”. When conditions are wet, the polymers swell up becoming completely water tight. When conditions are dry , the pores in the Roof Coat open up and trapped moisture can breathe out. Other roofing products are water tight all the time. Moisture will work up through the substrata and become trapped under the water proof material. When this heats up it turns water to vapor, expanding many times, causing blistering and destroying adhesion, or it freezes which then also breaks down the adhesion, leading to roof failure.
Fillers - Most coatings use cheap fillers to keep the cost of their product down. THERMO-SHEILD uses ceramic microspheres, very similar to the ceramics used in the Space Shuttles, which are close to indestructible by the conditions faced each day by buildings.
Ceramic micro-spheres - Ceramic micro-spheres are about 50% by volume in THERMO-SHEILD coatings. The micro-spheres help out coatings reflect about 83% of sunlight. They stop most radiant heat transfer before it ever becomes a problem. Ceramic is one of the best non-conductors of heat.
Other types of insulation just slow down the transfer of heat. Ceramics can “dissipate” heat, transferring it back into the atmosphere – the heat never gets into the building to become a problem. A cube of ceramic material can be heated to over 1100 degrees C and can be safely picked up with bare fingers only seconds later while the cube is still glowing red-hot in the center. Ceramics make the heat dissipate quickly from the surface.
Because of the ceramics, our coatings are more resistant to dirt accumulation than other elastomerics. The ceramic micro-spheres themselves are fireproof and can dissipate great amounts of heat. As a result, THERMO-SHEILD coatings have good fire resistant properties. In the Japanese flame tests, our coating had Zero flame retention.
Pigment - THERMO-SHEILD Coatings make use of Titanium-dioxide and Aluminum-trihydrate as our white pigments. These are very stable substances that are very resistant to natural breakdown. THERMO-SHEILD is rated Fire Resistant class A.
