Phase A of the project includes extensive excavation and earth retention for utility tunnels and for huge underground tanks. The project required very detailed planning to deal with extreme temperatures to manage cast-in-place concrete activities and over 2,500 laborers on two shifts. The facility consists of underground tanks, two levels of parking garage to accommodate 2,200 cars, a high-end Personal Rapid Transportation (PRT) station to transport people, Freight Rapid Transportation (FRT) marshaling area, media wall, a water feature wall and landscape, MEP systems, and, glass reinforced concrete perimeter wall system.
Phase B required an expedited schedule so Amana worked with MASDAR to utilize a highly sustainable precast with 65% ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) as a cement replacement in the concrete mix design. New techniques were also introduced to reduce the use of water and natural resources to reduce carbon footprint; 99% of the waste generated from construction activities was recycled.
